10 Ways to Create a Practical Nursery

I have several close friends that are currently pregnant and have been recently asked what tips I would give on creating a nursery? I decided to answer their questions by creating a post for all of you on the top 10 ways to create a practical nursery.
1. Choose a theme or color scheme for the nursery that you enjoy.Let’s be honest. The nursery is for you much more than it is the baby. By the time your child is old enough to care you will most likely have updated the nursery to a toddler room anyway. That is why I recommend choosing a color scheme or theme that you enjoy and that is relaxing and calming to you. Let’s face it. You are going to be the one spending the most time in the baby’s room and many of those hours will be spent in the middle of the night feeding the baby so you might as well make the room look like what you would like it to look like. For us this was my favorite color; blue with accents of yellow and grey.

2. Make sure you have a comfortable rocking chair or glider.This tip is related to the first. You will spend many hours feeding and cuddling a fussy baby so you might as well make sure you have a comfortable chair to do so in – and I highly recommend that you get a chair that rocks or glides. It has a calming effect on babies.

3. Make sure your diaper station is practical and well stocked.We have a convenient (but cute) basket that sits on my son’s dresser which doubles as his changing station that we keep stuffed with Huggies Snug & Dry diapers that we buy in bulk from Sam’s Club. We prefer these diapers (especially at night time) as they provide up to 12 hours of protection and keep your baby’s skin dry and rash free.

4. Have other common nursery essentials nearby.We have a shelf above the changing station that includes other essentials for diapering such as wipes, butt paste, essential oils, brush/comb, fingernail clippers, etc.

5. Keep a drawer full of burping clothes.You can NEVER have too many burp clothes. If you think you have enough buy 10 more. Maybe I am a little bias as we had a reflux baby but we went through this things like they were tissues.
6. Get a good quality sound machine. Even better if you can find the kind like we have that projects a picture onto the ceiling. Our toddler still loves this thing. And make sure it has a timer.
7. Figure out a good system to store books and get a lot of books.I could go on and on about the importance of reading to your child and while technically you only need one or two books for your child’s sake; you will want many more books for your own sake. Trust me. If I have to read “Go Dogs Go” one more time I might scream.
8. Get a good video monitor system.They have TONS of these on the market now. We have the Summer infant system and while I like it I understand some people’s concerns about the wifi aspect but any kind of video monitor will come in incredibly handy. Again, trust me on this one.
9. Get breathable bumpers.While traditional bumpers are no longer recommended due to suffocation concerns bumpers are still needed so a baby’s leg or arm doesn’t get stuck. We learned this lesson the hard way. If they get stuck it’s going to be at 2 AM I can guarantee it. 🙂 They now make these incredible breathable bumpers in all different colors. Get yourself a set.
10. Consider a dresser instead of a traditional changing table.You will get MUCH more use out of it as children quickly outgrow a traditional changing table and it doubles as storage for all their clothes. Totally a fantastic decision in my opinion.

And that my friends is my advice for creating a practical nursery.
