So after our weekend was turned upside down by the inability to work on our backyard I was offically on the hunt for something fun to do to get my husband out of his awful mood. (Y’all he actually compared the let down of not getting to work on our backyard to waking up on Christmas morning only to find out that Christmas had been cancelled. Really???)
Will searching online I came across the announcement for a local auction. I had seen this annoucement before while searching for yard sales and had secretly always wanted to go and since we had nothing to do anyway since we had planned on spending the entire weekend working on the backyard we decided to go. The auction started at 7pm so we decided to get there a hour early to check out the goods.
I’m tell ya what. We pulled into the parking lot and almost turned around and left right then and there. The “auction house” was a small blue shed on the side of a dirt road. We pulled into the dirt parking lot and Josh asked me, “Uh, is this safe?” But we decided to try it out.
Seconds later we were walking into the most interesting experience I’ve had in a long time. The auction “house” was full of a bunch of old country folk who apparently attend the auction every Saturday night and it is the “event of the week” as we were told by several regulars. The old folks were very nice and excited to welcome a couple of “newcomers.”
Not long after the auction concession stand opened up and flurry of corndogs, french fries, cokes, and popcorn started being distributed. We were hurried to the sweet, little old lady in the back (seriously she must have been 90) to get our bidding number which is your number forever to keep. We received our number on a paper plate. The excitement was building.
Fifteen minutes til seven they started taking dollars for raffletickets…apparently this is the local lottery and everyone participated. And after that…it was time! They auctioned off items all the way from $1 to $200. Items ranged from a hairdryer to big pieces of furniture to collectible coins and dollar bills. Since you keep the same number the auctioneer had everyone except our number memorized and the commentary was HILARIOUS!
We did not end up purchasing anything but still had a blast at our Saturday night auction adventure. We actually ended up leaving before they got to the items we wanted because we were starving and hadn’t eaten anything (it was jut a little to iffy to me to purchase food from a shack). We stayed three hours and then left to get something to eat but I’m pretty sure the auction went on until late into the night.
Oh the adventures my hubby and I have together! All in all in was a lot of fun and we even said we might go back!
My husband and I LOVE auctions! He grew up in a family of auctioneers and is working on becoming one himself! Pretty cool and you can find pretty awesome stuff at an auction…we scored a huge rodeo poster at our last one! In fact every month or so we have "date night" at a local auction, soooooooo romantic,huh!?
Sounds like fun! I remember going to a few auctions with my parents as a child, but I have yet to go to any as an adult. Now I want to check one out 😉
My dad is an antique auctioneer in CT. I grew up working at his Auction Gallery and I think it is soo much fun not only to see if you can bring home something you have fallen for, but it's fun to see what other people might be after. Sometimes things that weren't necessarily valuable could be the most popular, with a bidding war breaking out over it. Always fun to people watch at auctions, too 😉 Fun Post!

Amy how much fun would it be to grow up doing that! And your so right…it's so funny the things people will get in a bidding war over! At the auction we went to it was over a metal plant holder you could have gotten for $10 at Target but they bidded it up to $120! Crazy!
