I have been doing a lot of thinking lately (which is always a scary thought) and the sermon at church today really verbalized all my thoughts. I am sure many of my readers have, like myself, heard many people say they are scared of how this upcoming election is going to turn out. Yes, in many ways this is a pivotal election but regardless of who does or does not get elected Tuesday, those of us who are Christians have nothing to fear!
There are many, many scriptures throughout the Bible that mention we should not fear the future. For example….
Deuteronomy 3:22 “Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God himself will fight for you.”
Deuteronomy 31:8 “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Lamentations 3:57 “You came near when I called you and you said, “Do not fear.”
Mark 5:36 “Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
God warns us not to fear because fear allows us to forget God’s power and sovereignty. Fear is misplaced faith and fear blocks out generosity. For example, fear of the unknown may cause you to hoard your resources, time, talent instead of using them for God’s glory. Finding out you have an illness and fearing the future can deter you from living your life to the fullest of God’s purpose. For those of us in our 20s fear of the unknown is extremely common. The “what-ifs” wear down our thoughts and our actions respond.
In Romans 8:37-39 it says, “in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
If you belong to God you don’t have to fear what is in the present or future. Wow. That’s powerful stuff.
This also means we should not be afraid if a president is chosen on Tuesday you don’t believe in because who leads our country cannot separate you from God. Don’t misunderstand me…I am not saying that if you are a Christian you should not vote. By all means GO VOTE. What I am saying is that regardless of what happens God has unlimited control of all and maintains sovereignty and that my friends, is awesome!
Yes things are not ok in the world or even in the wonderful US of A but because we belong to Him and He is sovereign we will be ok.
So when someone asks you at the water cooler at work on Tuesday why you don’t seem worried over who wins this election I challenge you to respond, “I voted but I am not worried…God is sovereign!”
