Date Night Bust

Ever have one of those nights were you have all the right intentions and your plan just doesn’t work out? That’s the kind of date night we had Saturday night. Let me back up.

We have worked out the sweetest and best arrangement with my brother and sister in law in which one day/night a month we swap kids so each us get a free date night and some precious time with our nephews/niece. It’s the perfect deal for everyone.

We had the joy of watching our two nephews and niece a few Saturdays ago. (Let me tell you four kids 5 and younger is no joke)! We had a blast running around and playing and were ALL exhausted come bed time. Here are the youngest two thinking I’m crazy.

And a photo of all four before bedtime. Cue the madness.

This past Saturday was our turn. We dropped the little guy off and headed off for our first date in several months (and only second attempt at a date since the little guy was born–he is 7 months old ya’ll)! I am a big advocate of dating your spouse and the importance of maintaining your relationship first and foremost. I’m not going to lie…at this stage it is certainly easier to skip it and stay home but I do think it is very important to dress up and get away with your spouse. And we had the best of intentions in mind to do just this!

Our plan was to get a drink, have an early dinner, and then catch a seven o’clock movie and pick up the little guy to get him home in bed in a somewhat reasonable time in case he woke up when we got home. The dinner and drink was a success. We had a great time catching up with each other. We talked about our family, work, friends, the little guy, and even reminisced about when we first starting dating (9 years ago! DANG). When then headed over to the theater and were there 40 minutes before the movie. That’s where it all went wrong. Would you believe that all the seven o’clock movies were sold out?!? We were bummed. We haven’t seen a movie at the theater in 5 months!

Time for Plan B. We decided it would be fun to head to our local town (the same town Walking Dead is filmed in) and get coffee and just chat. So we drove the 15+ mins only to find out the town was shutdown. Who closes at seven o’clock on a Saturday night.

We had a few minutes where we felt like losers. We love our city but there really is not a lot to do without going in to Atlanta. We were struggling for ideas.
“We could go home and watch a movie.”
“Yeah, but if we do that might as well pick up the little man first because he will sleep anyway then we don’t have to go back out when we are tired.”
First chance to get out by ourselves….no limit on time and we were back ready to pick up the little guy at seven?

Then we realized you know what…we may not have gotten to see our movie or had a long date night but we DID go out and we had a very enjoyable dinner. Mission accomplished.
See I told you all I wanted a blog not about our perfect life but how about seeing the beauty in the imperfection and this the perfect example!

Thanks, Kathy. It was still a blast. Just learning that life is unpredictable and that is not always bad. 😉
